A Mars sign calculator finds the zodiac sign Mars was in when you were born, using your birth date, time and place, and that sign describes how you take action, pursue what you want, handle anger and express desire. Mars usually spends about six to seven weeks in each sign, but when it turns retrograde it can stay in one sign for six months or more, so you cannot guess your Mars sign from your Sun sign or your birthday. A calculator checks the planet's real position and gives you the sign, degree and house in seconds.
This guide explains what Mars actually governs in a chart, how to use the calculator correctly, what each of the twelve Mars signs looks like in practice, and the mistakes that make people misread their Mars.
Mars is the planet of drive. Where the Sun shows what you want to become, Mars shows how you go after it. It is the part of you that gets out of bed, defends a boundary, competes, flirts and fights.
Your Mars sign tends to answer questions like:
How do I start things, and how quickly do I lose interest?
What does my anger look like, and how long does it last?
How do I assert myself at work or in a negotiation?
What kind of physical activity or challenge energises me?
How do I pursue someone I'm attracted to?
Mars is also central to sexual chemistry, which is why it is read alongside Venus in compatibility work. Venus describes what you find attractive; Mars describes how you go after it.
The Sun moves through the zodiac at a steady pace, one sign a month. Mars takes about 687 days, almost two years, to go around once, but its apparent speed from Earth varies. When Mars is far away on the other side of the Sun it moves quickly, about a sign every six weeks. When Earth overtakes it every 26 months or so, Mars appears to stop, go backwards (retrograde) and then go forwards again. During that loop it can spend five to seven months in the same sign.
So two people born in the same month of different years almost certainly have different Mars signs, and two people born a year apart could even share one. Only an ephemeris lookup tells you the answer.
The free Mars sign calculator at Astrology Geeks takes under a minute. Follow these steps for an accurate result.
Use the date from your birth certificate. Check the day–month order carefully if you were born somewhere that writes dates differently.
Mars changes sign only a handful of times a year, so the date alone usually settles the sign. The time matters on the day Mars changes sign, and it is essential for the Mars house.
The place lets the calculator apply the right time zone and daylight saving rules and work out the houses for your latitude.
You will see something like "Mars in Cancer 4.9°, 7th house." Note whether Mars is marked retrograde (often shown with an "R" or "Rx"); about one person in ten is born with Mars retrograde, and it changes how the energy is expressed.
Mars rules Aries, so it is at full strength: fast, direct and competitive. You act first and think later, anger flares and fades quickly, and you love a challenge.
Slow to start, impossible to stop. You prefer steady, physical effort and resist being pushed. Anger is rare but long-lasting. Desire is sensual and patient.
Your energy is mental and verbal. You multitask, argue with words and need variety. Boredom drains you faster than hard work.
Mars is in its fall here, which simply means action is filtered through feeling. You act to protect people and places you care about, and anger can come out indirectly as moods or sulks.
Bold, generous and dramatic. You want your effort to be seen and appreciated. Pride drives you, and wounded pride is your biggest trigger.
Precise, efficient and hard-working. You channel energy into improving things and get angry at incompetence. You show desire through attentive, practical care.
Mars is in detriment here, so direct confrontation feels uncomfortable. You assert yourself through diplomacy and strategy, and you fight hardest for fairness.
Traditional co-ruler of Scorpio, so Mars is powerful but private. Intense, determined and strategic, you rarely show your hand, and you do not forget a betrayal.
Restless, adventurous and outspoken. You are motivated by ideals and freedom, and you fight for what you believe in, sometimes before you have the facts.
Mars is exalted here: disciplined, ambitious and enduring. You play the long game, control your temper, and treat goals like construction projects.
Independent and principled. You act on behalf of ideas and groups, resist being told what to do, and can be coolly stubborn in an argument.
Fluid and intuitive. You act on inspiration rather than plans, avoid head-on conflict, and are most energised when your effort serves something meaningful.
The house shows the arena where your drive is most active. In brief: 1st, your body and personal initiative; 2nd, earning and resources; 3rd, communication and local life; 4th, home and family; 5th, creativity, romance and sport; 6th, daily work and health; 7th, partnerships, including conflict with partners; 8th, intimacy, shared money and crisis; 9th, beliefs, travel and study; 10th, career and ambition; 11th, groups and causes; 12th, behind-the-scenes effort and hidden anger.
Take a sample birth: 11 April 1991, 11:45 pm, New York. The Sun is in Aries, so a quick reading might assume a fiery, direct temperament all round. The calculator, though, puts Mars at Cancer 4.9° in the 7th house.
That changes the picture. Mars in Cancer acts to protect and is driven by emotional loyalty. In the 7th house, that drive is aimed at partners and close one-to-one relationships. This person may be fiercely defensive of a spouse or business partner, or may experience their own anger mainly through conflicts with partners.
Here the Aries Sun and Cancer Mars are three signs apart. The Sun wants to charge ahead independently; Mars wants to act on behalf of the people it loves. The result is often a person who is bold for others but hesitant to fight for themselves, and who benefits from learning to say directly what they want instead of hinting through moods.
Reading Mars only as anger. Mars is motivation, courage, desire and stamina as well. A gentle Mars sign doesn't mean you lack drive; it shows a different style of drive.
Assuming "fall" or "detriment" means bad. Mars in Cancer or Libra simply works less directly. Many people with these placements become skilled protectors and negotiators.
Ignoring retrograde. A retrograde Mars often internalises energy before acting. If yours is marked Rx, read the sign with that in mind.
Forgetting the house. Mars in Leo in the 10th (ambitious leadership) behaves differently from Mars in Leo in the 12th (hidden pride, private creative effort).
Using Mars alone for compatibility. Mars works with Venus. Always read them as a pair.
Look at Mars alongside your Sun to see whether your drive and purpose agree, and alongside Venus to understand your romantic style. Aspects to Mars, especially from Saturn (discipline or frustration) or Jupiter (enthusiasm or overreach), add nuance. A full birth chart at Astrology Geeks shows all of these at once.
It is the zodiac sign Mars occupied when you were born. Enter your date, time and place into a Mars sign calculator to find it.
It shows how you take action, assert yourself, compete, handle anger and pursue desire.
Usually not for the sign, because Mars changes signs infrequently. You need the time if Mars changed sign on your birthday, and always for the house.
Traditionally Mars is strongest in Aries and Scorpio (its own signs) and in Capricorn (its exaltation). Every sign has its own effective way of acting.
About six to seven weeks on average, but up to seven months when it goes retrograde.
Venus shows what you value and find attractive; Mars shows how you act on desire and go after what you want.
Your Mars sign explains the style behind your effort, anger and attraction, and it takes a minute to calculate correctly. Enter your exact birth details, note the sign, house and whether Mars is retrograde, and read it as your personal engine of action. Once you understand your Mars, it becomes much easier to work with your energy rather than against it.
