Your Midheaven, or MC, is the highest point of the zodiac at the moment you were born, and a Midheaven calculator finds its sign and degree from your exact birth time, date and place. The Midheaven describes your public direction: the reputation you build, the kind of contribution you want to be known for and the role you grow into over time. It is extremely time-sensitive, moving about one degree every four minutes, so an accurate birth time is essential.
This guide explains what the Midheaven is, how to calculate it reliably, how to read each of the twelve MC signs, how to add depth with its ruler and nearby planets, a worked example, common mistakes and answers to the questions people ask most.
Imagine standing at your birthplace at the moment you were born and looking due south (in the northern hemisphere). The point where the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent path, crosses your local meridian overhead is the Midheaven. Its Latin name, Medium Coeli, means "middle of the sky."
The Midheaven is one of four chart angles:
Ascendant (ASC): the eastern horizon, how you meet the world.
Descendant (DSC): the western horizon, how you meet others in partnership.
Midheaven (MC): the top of the chart, your public direction and reputation.
Imum Coeli (IC): the bottom of the chart, your roots and private foundation.
Because the MC is tied to the Earth's rotation, it moves through the entire zodiac each day. Each sign occupies the MC for somewhere between about 1.5 and 2.5 hours, depending on latitude and season.
The free Midheaven calculator gives your MC sign, degree and ruling planet.
A birth certificate, hospital record or written family record is ideal. A remembered "around 3 p.m." is a starting point, but expect uncertainty.
The birthplace is essential. The calculator uses the coordinates to find your local meridian and applies the correct historical time zone and daylight saving rules.
Note the MC's sign and degree. If it's near 0° or 29°, a small time error could change the sign.
If your time is approximate, run the calculator at 30 minutes either side. If the sign holds, you can read it with confidence. If it changes, treat both signs as possibilities.
Each sign has a ruling planet. The MC ruler's sign and house show how you pursue your public direction.
Known for initiative, courage and leadership. You thrive in roles where you can start things, compete or pioneer. Reputation comes from bold action.
Known for reliability, taste and persistence. Careers that build tangible value, such as finance, food, design or land, suit you. Reputation grows slowly and lasts.
Known for communication and versatility. Writing, teaching, media, sales and anything with variety suits you. You may have more than one career.
Known for care and protection. Roles that nurture, house, feed or support people suit you. Your public image is often parental or protective.
Known for creativity, warmth and presence. Leadership, performance, creative direction and work with children suit you. You want to be recognised for your contribution.
Known for skill, analysis and service. Health, editing, research, operations and craftsmanship suit you. Reputation comes from competence.
Known for fairness, diplomacy and aesthetics. Law, mediation, design, partnerships and client-facing work suit you. Reputation grows through relationships.
Known for depth, intensity and transformation. Research, psychology, finance, investigation and crisis work suit you. You may be seen as powerful or private.
Known for vision, teaching and exploration. Education, publishing, travel, law and philosophy suit you. Reputation comes from expanding others' horizons.
Known for authority, ambition and structure. Management, government, business and long-term institution-building suit you. Reputation is earned over time.
Known for innovation and community. Technology, science, activism and group leadership suit you. You may be seen as ahead of your time.
Known for compassion and imagination. Art, music, healing, spirituality and charitable work suit you. Your public role may be inspirational or service-oriented.
Find the planet that rules your MC sign (for example, Venus for Libra, Mars for Aries, Saturn for Capricorn). Its sign and house show the route to your public goals. A Cancer MC with the Moon in the 3rd house builds reputation through communication; the same MC with the Moon in the 12th builds it through behind-the-scenes or healing work.
A planet within about 5 to 8 degrees of the MC is highly visible in your public life. Venus there adds charm and aesthetic careers; Saturn adds authority and responsibility; Jupiter adds expansion and opportunity.
In Placidus and other quadrant systems, the MC is the 10th house cusp. In Whole Sign houses, the MC can fall in the 9th, 10th or 11th house. That's why different websites sometimes disagree about your 10th house; the MC sign itself doesn't change.
The Midheaven never works alone. Directly opposite it sits the IC, always in the opposite sign. A Capricorn MC has a Cancer IC; a Leo MC has an Aquarius IC. Astrologers read the two as one axis: the IC is what you need privately to stay steady, and the MC is what you build publicly from that base. Someone with a Gemini MC and Sagittarius IC may need freedom, meaning and room to roam at home in order to sustain a busy, communicative public life. When career feels hollow, the problem is often at the IC end, an unmet private need, rather than in the work itself. Reading both signs together gives a more honest picture of what a sustainable career looks like for you.
A sample birth: 5 May 1992, 09:15, in Seoul. The calculator places the MC at about 23° Pisces, with Cancer rising.
A Pisces Midheaven points toward a public direction involving compassion, imagination or healing. This person might be drawn to art, music, film, counselling, nursing or spiritual work. Their reputation could rest on inspiring others or making people feel understood.
The traditional ruler of Pisces is Jupiter, here in Virgo in the 3rd house. That suggests the route runs through practical communication and skill: writing, teaching or detail-oriented work in local or digital media. Pisces's modern ruler, Neptune, sits in Capricorn in the 7th house, pointing to partnerships and clients as a channel for the imaginative work.
Mars sits at about 29° Pisces, within six degrees of the MC in the 10th house. That adds drive and visibility: this person isn't a passive dreamer but someone who pursues creative or healing goals with energy. A plausible path is a career as a music therapist, creative director or wellness writer who builds a strong, energetic public profile.
Using an approximate time without testing. An hour's error moves the MC about 15 degrees, half a sign.
Using a noon chart. A noon MC isn't yours. Leave it blank if you don't know your time.
Treating the MC as a job title. It describes direction and reputation, not a specific occupation.
Confusing the MC with the 10th house in Whole Sign charts. They can differ; both can be valid.
Ignoring the ruler. The ruler's sign and house often explain more about your actual career path than the MC sign alone.
Forgetting the IC. Your public direction rests on your private foundation. The IC sign shows what supports you.
Write a one-line direction statement based on your MC sign: "I want to be known for ___."
Check whether your current work moves you toward it. If not, identify one step that would.
Track transits to your MC. When Jupiter, Saturn or other slow planets cross or aspect your MC, career developments often follow.

It's the zodiac sign at the top of your birth chart. Enter your exact birth time, date and place into a Midheaven calculator to find it.
Not reliably. The MC changes sign about every two hours, so a date alone could fit any sign.
It describes your public direction, reputation and the contribution you want to be known for.
In Placidus and other quadrant systems, yes. In Whole Sign houses, the MC can fall in a different house.
It shows your career direction and reputation, not a specific job. The MC ruler, 10th house and 6th house add detail.
Your Midheaven is one of the most useful points in your chart for thinking about long-term direction. Get an accurate birth time, calculate the MC, test its sensitivity, then read its sign alongside its ruler and any nearby planets. Used that way, it becomes less a career prediction and more a compass for the reputation you want to build.
