CHARACTERISTICS
These are ancient prokaryotes often found in extreme environments, though they are also present in more moderate conditions.
They are genectically and biochemically distinct from bacteria.
Produce methane as a metabolic byproduct and are found in oxygen-free environments
Example: swamps and animal guts
Thrive in environments with very high salt concentration.
Example: The Dead Sea, salt evaporation ponds.
Live in extremely hot and acidic environments
Example: Hot springs and volcanic vents
