BioActive Fluids & Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics

 Joint SIG Meeting

17-18th June 2024, University College London

We are pleased to announce a UK Fluids Network joint Special Interest Group (SIG) meeting between Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics and Biologically Active Fluids on Monday 17th & Tuesday 18th June 2024 at University College London. The meeting theme is

'Joint Challenges in Non-Newtonian and BioActive Fluids'

Researchers across BioActive fluids and Non-Newtonian fluid mechanics often examine applications with similar underlying mechanics and face similar technical challenges. This meeting will bring together these two communities allowing knowledge to be shared on overlapping and complementary applications and methods.

The meeting will consist of a half-day ECR focused meeting on Monday 17th June, and a full day meeting on Tuesday 18th June for all career stages. On the 18th June we will have four focused sessions with an invited speaker from both SIGs contributing along with a contributed talk from an ECR. We will begin the meeting with an introduction to both fields, highlighting the current challenges faced in the two communities. Thematic sessions on topics ranging from pattern formation to multiscale modelling will then highlight how similar problems arise and are tackled in both biologically active and non-Newtonian fluid applications - see programme.

Invited speakers:

BioActive Fluids:  David Smith (University of Birmingham - BioActive SIG Leader), Oliver Jensen (University of Manchester), Rachel Bearon (King's College London) & Philip Pearce (UCL)

Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics: Alexander Morozov (University of Edinburgh - Non-Newtonian SIG Co-leader),  Duncan Hewitt (University of Cambridge), Helen Wilson (UCL), Anne Juel (University of Manchester), Timothy Phillips (University of Cardiff) & Edward Hinton (University of Melbourne)

We gratefully acknowledge financial support for the meeting from the EPSRC National Fellowships in Fluid Dynamics Hub (NFFDy): https://nffdy8.wordpress.com,  The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) Small Grant Scheme: https://ima.org.uk and QJMAM Fund for Applied Mathematics https://ima.org.uk/support/grants/qjmam-fund/.
