Match the Battery and Solar Panel to the Load
The most important thing is, know what you are doing. That means to calculate and size your Aux battery system accordingly to your load. The battery then needs to be correctly managed - charged - protected - with the appropriate controller system. A battery voltage monitor or coulomb counter is helpful in knowing the state of charge the aux. battery. (simply, it's like having a fuel gauge for your battery). Batteries are rated in A/hr's and Solar Panel in Watts. There is usually only about 5 hours of solar energy available to a solar panel. From experience, a solar panel will never output its advertised maximum rated power.
