Blindspot detection was one of the earliest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features offered on vehicles. The system alerts the driver to objects in the blind spot of the vehicle. Servicing these systems is straightforward to diagnose and repair.
A blind spot is an area near a vehicle that is not within the view of the driver. External and internal mirrors are designed for the driver to view passing and following traffic and if the mirrors are adjusted correctly it is possible to eliminate some blind spots to the side of a vehicle. However, many drivers don’t set up and use their mirrors correctly. Blind spot monitoring technology was then developed to assist in moving safely when changing lanes.
Blind spot monitoring technology features a sensor device that detects when other vehicles are located to the side or rear of a vehicle. When the sensor becomes aware of another vehicle it will alert the driver with lights, sound, vibration or even instigate autonomous crash avoidance intervention.
Blind spot technology can use either radar, sonar, electromagnetic waves or camera imagery to detect if another vehicle is getting too close or if you are about to move into a space that is already occupied.
We can only look at so many things on the road at once and with highways having as many as five lanes things can get a little crazy, especially in poor weather. An extra pair of ‘eyes’ that respond to hazards quickly might serve to make you and your passengers feel a little safer.
In some OEM systems, cameras are placed inside the side mirrors and relay information to a computer. Other systems use electromagnetic or ultrasonic waves that are emitted from your car and then bounce off nearby traffic. These are usually mounted on the rear corners of the vehicle. Newer systems use radar or sonar to monitor traffic, warn the driver when necessary and can even alter a vehicle’s direction if necessary.
Blind spot technology is still in its infancy. If your vehicle was released before it was a standard OEM fitment option and you want to install it, there are many aftermarket kits available.
