Big Brothers Big Sisters is a nonprofit organization where volunteers work mentoring the youth. The program creates support and lasting positive relationships for the youth. We work on helping the children learn as well as socialize with others. You get paired up with a "little" which is the student you work with. You will then learn more about one another and work together throughout the year. This program was founded in 1904 by a court clerk in New York. He noticed that caring adults could help so many of these kids stay out of trouble. There are many different parts of this organization throughout the country. The one I am involved in works specifically with elementary students after school in the library. At my location, we mostly focus on math and english, while trying to teach social skills and stress the importance of friendship and equality.Â
