The Birds and Nature of Beverly MA
The Birds and Nature of Beverly MA
by Greg Power
A work in process.
This website was started as part Massachusetts Audubon Society's 2021 - 2022 Birder's Certificate Program (BCP) for the Independent Study requirement which focused on five specific sites within Beverly MA to better qualify the avifauna in those areas. These were selected to support species of concern as identified by MassWildlife's Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program that are normally found in grasslands or marsh habitats during the migration and nesting seasons. For more information on the BCP project see the Project Information page.
Beverly has a wealth of other public open space parcels, many of which provide great opportunities for birding. Some of these are owned by the City of Beverly and managed by the Open Space and Recreation Committee (OSRC) or other city departments. These include parks, playgrounds and cemeteries. Others are owned by county or state-wide conservation groups such as The Trustees of Reservations, Massachusetts Audubon Society and Essex County Greenbelt Association.
As my BCP project matured, it has changed into an effort to better inform the residents of Beverly of the great outdoor resources available with the city, local environmental issues and resources to learn more about them.. This includes creating lists of local birding spots, identifying local and regional organizations active in environmental topics, and leading Beverly Bird Walks in partnership with the Beverly Public Library.
The following organizations own and/or manage open space within the City of Beverly
