There are a number of City and local non-profit organizations that work in environmental areas. Below is a list of these along with descriptions of their activities and responsibilities taken from their websites.
The City has several committees and commissions whose work includes local environmental and open space topics. Below is a listing of those organizations and (from their websites) their missions. City Of Beverly Committees & Commissions (listed in order of ecological impact)
Beverly City Council - exercise the legislative powers of the City
Open Space & Recreation Committee - advises the Mayor, City Council, City departments, private organizations and the general public on matters concerning open space and recreation, and works to acquire and preserve land and ecosystems within Beverly.
Conservation Commission - protect, promote, and enhance the quantity and quality of the natural resources within the City, especially wetlands, wildlife and water resources, through planning, acquisition, land management, regulation, scientific research and public education.
Parks & Recreation Commission - prides itself on enriching the lives of all Beverly residents. Through access to and beautification of our fantastic beaches and open spaces, life enrichment classes and our famous Parks and Camps programs, no matter the time of year we work to offer fun, exciting and challenging ways to enhance our community.
Lynch Park Advisory Committee - has set many goals for the future, the primary one being to beautify the park itself and help it better serve the people of Beverly. Also the Committee wants to try to update the park while still retaining its historical character and charm. The committee is concentrating on several key issues regarding the park such as the ornamentation of the park itself, the buildings and infrastructure of the park, and access to the park. Sustainability Office - committed to a sustainable future for Beverly by significantly reducing carbon pollution and enhancing our community's resilience to climate change. We strive to protect our community members and natural resources through environmentally conscious municipal operations and collaborative community programs. We work with other City departments to lower emissions in municipal buildings and fleets, protect our shared spaces, and help residents and businesses participate in programs and initiatives that reduce energy and waste.
Harbor Management Authority - supports the City of Beverly on various projects and initiatives that involve waterfront development and use. BHMA also focuses on making waterfront access and enjoyment more accessible to all stakeholders in the city - residents, commercial fishermen, recreational boaters, recreational fishermen, and visitors.
Clean Energy Advisory Committee - Recognizing the need to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and the need to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, the mission of the Beverly Clean Energy Advisory Committee is to promote the use of emerging clean energy technologies in the city by encouraging projects using clean energy techniques, developing a clean energy strategy for the City, and educating the city and its residents about clean energy technology.
Cemetery Department - committed to providing serene, attractive, and contemplative settings for the families of the deceased. We are dedicated to offering timely and high quality service in a dignified manner with respect to the wishes and beliefs of the deceased and their family.
Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee - An advisory and consulting group to the Mayor, City Council and other interested departments, boards, commissions or committees and to the residents of Beverly relative to any and all matters concerning conditions for bicyclists and pedestrians in the City of Beverly. The Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee’s role is to promote and inform strategic planning for city infrastructure that facilitates safe and effective use by bicyclists, pedestrians, and other vulnerable road users for transportation, commuting and recreation.
Planning Board - makes careful studies of the resources, possibilities and needs of the town, particularly with respect to conditions detrimental to public health or otherwise in and about rented dwellings, and make plans for the development of the municipality, with special reference to proper housing of its inhabitants.
Community Preservation Committee - The Community Preservation Act (CPA) is a smart growth tool that helps communities preserve open space and historic sites, create affordable housing, and develop outdoor recreational facilities. Funding for these projects comes from a combination of both local and state tax revenues set aside for this purpose. In Beverly, there is a 1% surcharge on taxes levied against real property. These funds are awarded annually through a competitive application process that launched in October (please see the Current Funding Round tab for more information).
Municipal Planting Study Committee - Review the City’s current practices and policies as they relate to native plantings, the work of multimember bodies and other volunteer organizations in the City relating to native plantings, and what best practices may exist in other municipalities related to native plantings.
Waste Reduction Committee - acts in an advisory and consulting capacity to the Mayor, City Council, and other interested City departments, boards, committees or commissions and to the citizens of the City, relative to any and all matters concerning solid waste management to identify ways of increasing recycling and waste reduction and serve as a resource for the general education of the public with respect to matters concerning solid waste management, solid waste reduction, and recycling.
