One of the reasons I developed this site was to increase environmental and ecological literacy in the area. On these pages are resources to help interested people learn more about the environment of Beverly and Essex County and to engage in helping others.
Several organizations, aside from being land stewards in Beverly, have robust educational programs and conduct field trips covering a variety of subjects. These of course include birds, but also other natural science and history topics.
Mass Audubon Society - Several state-wide education programs as well as field trips from Joppa Flats in Newburyport and Ipswich River in Topsfield. Volunteer opportunities are available at both locations as well as some North Shore-wide projects. Noteworthy are their Wednesday and Friday morning birding programs.
The Trustees of Reservations - Most public environmental education programs are conducted at Appleton Farms or Crane Estate/Beach. Both properties are in Ipswich. The programs include hikes such as Snow Owl prowls, coastal kayaking and maple sugar tours.
Essex County Greenbelt Association - Greenbelt sponsors walks on their properties around the county. They also conduct Osprey surveys from Boston to NH where volunteers monitor 90 nests, including several in Salem Sound, reporting breeding activities.
Eastern Massachusetts has several very active birding clubs that sponsor birding trips and other educational programs. These include:
Other organizations that have educational offerings in the area are listed below While not land stewards in Beverly, they have active, mostly volunteer, programs that address topics relevant to the environment of the City.
Birds of Beverly pages:
Open Space and Environmental Organizations - A listing of City commissions and committees with some responsibility for creating, managing and maintaining areas for recreation and other open spaces in Beverly as well as other non and not for profit environmental organizations. I would encourage you to sign up for notices of their meetings and to review the agendas. And, if there are items of interest, attend a meeting either in person or virtually when available.
Open Space Resources - Curious about where to get outside in Beverly and the surrounding area? This page lists the organizations and sources of information about where you might explore. It is not a complete list as new properties open from time to time and I'm sure I have missed some.
Environmental science programs groups and articles and - As always, the more (good quality) data about the environment the better. This includes birds of course, but also other organisms in their environment such as trees, wildflowers and other animals. This page contains information on community science apps and organizations that are active in the Beverly area either through education or information collection.
Below is a listing of environmentally focused events in Beverly and the surrounding area. Some of these I've added from organization's calendar listings, others are a direct feed from organization's calendars that can be inserted into my own. Please see the listings for details as times and descriptions may not load correctly.
Abbreviations for some events: MAS = Mass Audubon Society, SSC = Salem Sound Coastwatch, ECGA = Essex County Greenbelt Association
