SAP MM (Materials Management) is the SAP module that runs a company's buying and stock. It covers everything from the moment someone needs a material, through requesting quotes, raising a purchase order and receiving goods, to checking the supplier's invoice and paying it. Along the way it keeps an accurate, valued record of inventory in every plant and storage location.
Because procurement touches finance, production and sales, SAP MM sits at the centre of most SAP projects. Manufacturers, retailers, pharma companies, construction firms and distributors all rely on it. In SAP S/4HANA the same capabilities are grouped under Sourcing and Procurement, which is why the current certification uses that name.
