ABAP (Advanced Business Application Programming) is SAP's own programming language. Standard SAP covers most business processes, but every company has gaps: a custom report, a special invoice layout, an interface to a bank or a validation the standard system does not perform. ABAP developers build those enhancements inside the SAP system, using the same data and transport tools that SAP itself uses.
The language has kept evolving. Classic ABAP still runs huge numbers of ECC and S/4HANA systems, while newer styles such as ABAP on HANA, CDS views and the ABAP RESTful Application Programming model (RAP) are used for S/4HANA and SAP BTP development. That mix of legacy and modern work is why ABAP remains one of the most requested SAP technical skills.
Who should learn SAP ABAP?
B.Tech, BCA, MCA and B.Sc (IT/CS) graduates looking for an SAP technical course for freshers
Java, Python or .NET developers who want to move into enterprise SAP development
SAP functional consultants who want to read and debug code on their projects
SAP support staff aiming for developer roles
ECC-era ABAP developers who need to update their skills for S/4HANA and ABAP Cloud
No previous SAP knowledge is required. Basic programming logic (variables, loops, conditions) and a little SQL make the first weeks much easier.
What you will learn in the SAP ABAP course
ABAP fundamentals, the development workbench, packages and message classes
The ABAP Dictionary: tables, data elements, domains and data types
Open SQL and working with internal tables
Debugging and modularisation (subroutines, function modules and includes)
Report programming: classical, interactive and ALV reports, selection screens and variants
Dialog (module pool) programming and custom transactions
Object-oriented ABAP concepts
Data migration with BDC and LSMW
Form development with SAPscript and Smart Forms
Interfaces and enhancements: RFC, ALE, IDocs, BAPIs, user exits and BAdIs, plus transport management
The overview on ZebLearn's SAP ABAP course page also mentions CDS views, OData and RAP for modern S/4HANA work, so ask the trainer how much of that is covered in your batch.
SAP ABAP certification overview
The training prepares you for C_ABAPD – SAP Certified Back-End Developer – ABAP Cloud. ZebLearn describes it as a practical 3-hour exam taken in Eclipse with ABAP Development Tools, with a 67% pass score, and notes that SAP currently lists it as a beta version. You pay the exam fee to SAP; ZebLearn's own course certificate is issued separately. Our guide to SAP certifications explains how SAP exams are booked.
Career paths and job roles
ZebLearn's careers section lists these roles for ABAP learners:
Junior SAP ABAP Developer
SAP ABAP Developer
SAP ABAP on HANA Developer
SAP S/4HANA Technical Consultant
SAP ABAP Support Consultant
With experience, ABAP developers typically grow into senior developer, technical lead or SAP BTP developer positions. If you are weighing ABAP against other technical tracks, read SAP ABAP vs BASIS vs BTP and then look at upcoming ABAP batches.
