THE PERKS OF HAVING INDOOR PLANTS

KEMAMAN: Indoor plants are one of the blessings for people who love to grow plants but do not have much time in their hands to take care of it.

Nurul Nasuha Abdul, 23, marketing manager of Nasuha Nursery said indoor plants have become popular among the community because of the power of social media such as Facebook and Twitter.

“I inherited this nursery from my mother and have been managing this nursery since I was 20. Indoor plants are one of the most sold plants here,” she said.

The demands for Calla Lily are getting higher because Calla Lily is the imitation of Lily. The difference between them is that Lily are plants that grow entirely in the water, while Calla Lily is an indoor plant.

Calla Lily gets a lot of demands among her customers because of its beautiful colors such as pink and yellow. Besides, Calla lily also can be used as a decoration plant for your space.

Calla Lily is very suitable to put in a vase on your dining table. It can live up to three weeks if you take care of it very well. You also can make a flower bouquet from it

“However, it can be wilt within a week if you do not take care of it. Calla Lily is pricey but it does not mean you can leave it just as you like,” Nasuha added.

There are also plants that are ‘low light’ which means it does not need the sunlight as much as the other indoor plants. This plant is suitable to be used in indoor gardens.

According to Nasuha, Anthurium is one of the most magical plants that ever existed. It can thrive just by the slightest ray of sunlight and needs the right amount of water.

Nasuha also said that indoor plants such as Calatea (peacock plant), Monstera (split-leaf) and Spider plants are very good to be placed in rooms because it purifies the air hence, can bring calmness in your soul.

“I do believe after a stressful day, we just want to free our minds from the problems and want to see something green in colour to relax our eyes,”.

Besides, certain types of indoor plants can also be used as medicine for cuts and burns. Majority of the community are used to the gel from aloe vera as their face treatment. It can be used as a natural moisturizer.

Indoor plants are also affordable enough that even students can purchase them. The price ranges for indoor plants such as Monstera at Nasuha Nursery started at RM13 to RM35 depending on their size.

“As someone who sits in front of the laptop for too long, it is very tiring so I used indoor plants as therapy for my eyes,” says Nurul Huda, a student of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

Hours spent in front of computer screens has led Huda to choose Monstera as the therapeutic plant to rest her eyes on.

Nasuha also shares tips on how to take care of indoor plants. The use of organic fertilizer like Milagro is highly recommended since it will help the soil fertility.

She also advises would-be plant parents to use flower pot saucer if they want to leave the house for several days. They only have to put water in it, and the plant will absorb the water from it.

“Dip your fingers in the soil for 3 inches into the soil, if the soil still sticks to your fingers, then the soil is still wet,” said the 23-year-old marketing manager.
