KUALA LUMPUR – Study hard or study smart? Some of us are confused and do not know which method is the best. Some people might think that studying hard is naturally more productive, while some people think that studying smart is more efficient as it works better for them. Things are quite subjective and dependant on the person. However, there is a lot more to discuss in this topic.

What is the difference between study smart and study hard? Study smart is working efficiently such as good time management, a balanced lifestyle, and knowing which work or things that needs to be prioritized. On the other hand, studying hard means that a person is burning the midnight oil studying something with less rest and having no balanced timetable in their daily routine.

In an interview by Berita DIMENSi via WhatsApp with Asri Hishamuddin, 22, a dean-list student in Academy of Malay Studies in University Malaya, was asked for his opinion about the best method of studying.

He shared his views on preferring the style of studying smart. For him, different styles result in different outcomes but the effectiveness depends on the individual themselves. He also stated sarcastically that he is not a robot, thus studying hard would not work for him.

When asked about how he managed to pull out a great result throughout his two years in University Malaya, he said that many would assume him to be a person well endowed in his course subject in university. However, in reality, he really does not remember most things taught or is actively trying to remember.

He questioned himself and said that to what limit should he take a bother to know most of these things? However, he realized that his advantage is having a good research ability.

“We need to know our source and the answer would present itself. With things online now, it is easier to get any information. Moreover, with good internet and a good device, imagination and access is the limit.

“In my case, the indecisiveness between these study methods is rooted to my Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and the medication I need to take has hampered me in achieving steady thought and concentration.

“However, I acknowledge myself as flexible. It boils back to everyone's stance, the need, desire, and limit to learn.

“Find an epistemological stance and apply which is best for the subject you study. There are principles that should be followed to understand and further advance certain disciplines.

“People need to recollect themselves to make a decision whether to push on to study but never bring themselves to a brink of collapse. Our well-being comes first,” advised the 22 years old dean-list student.

Asri also told us about his frustration towards the education system. He said that it is unfortunate that our system is not flexible to let us rest during this anxious and mentally drained period.

In conclusion, we can say that people can choose which way is the best for them. However, studying smart is preferable as it is more efficient and gives less pressure.
