RAWANG – From Latin America through the Middle East and other parts of Africa, the practice of piercing one’s ear is widespread as it is used to show their loyalty to a specific tribe or clan, social position and enhancing their appearance.

With the existence of social media, piercing has become a trend for everyone and has gained interest in Malaysia where people have been sharing their self-piercing journey on social media such as TikTok.

It has attracted many people, especially youngsters, to pierce at home but it can be considered dangerous to do it alone without skills and training.

May Ting, 23, staff at Scorpion Silver, said that allowing an inexperienced friend or yourself to do the piercing process is not recommended and to ensure the safety of their procedure, individuals need to go to a well-respected piercing studio.

She said well-trained piercers would know which part of the body is safe to pierce without excessive bleeding or causing micro-tears to our skin. A lot might go wrong when we decide to pierce our ears because we are not piercers.

“The dull point of the stud earrings included in Do-It-Yourself (DIY) piercing kits prevents them from easily penetrating through the ear skin. It employs blunt force, which can result in microtears and stress to the skin, resulting in scarring.

“Even still, as seen by the popularity of online throwaway DIY piercing kits, some people prefer to take matters into their own hands. While it is less expensive, it is also extremely dangerous to use,” said May Ting when contacted by Berita DIMENSi via Whatsapp.

Not only that, but it is also essential that a professional piercer has a piercing license to prove their qualification. May Ting, for example, has been in this piercing industry for six years and has been trained well enough to understand the whole piercing procedure.

Zulaika Fareisha Salehuddin, 22, a regular staff member from Swan Store, said that she prefers to do it at a professional place as they have more experience in this field.

She said that going to a professional place is safer and less painful than doing it ourselves. There is no guarantee that you won’t get any infection or rashes after doing it ourselves with zero knowledge about piercing.

“When I visited the Scorpion Silver jewellery store last week and had my piercing done there, it was done by the staff professionally with proper equipment, and everything was sterilized to ensure no bacteria-infested on the equipment.

“They also advised me on the aftercare that I need to comply with right after my piercing is done. For example, they advise me not to eat eggs and seafood for four days until my wound completely heals as this could trigger redness and itchy on our skin,” said Zulaika in an interview with Berita DIMENSi via Instagram.

The whole piercing procedure was very smooth and the staff was also well trained for the procedures. Hence, every time Zulaika asked questions, they would answer them promptly with no hesitation.

In other words, getting pierced is not something you should try to accomplish independently. There are no do-it-yourself surgical procedures, and there should not be any for the same reason.
