Vtuber gradually gained its spot in the local and international online streaming industry in 2016 when Kizuna Ai made her first debut on Youtube as the first genuine Vtuber.

Vtuber is defined as ‘Virtual Youtuber’ who is your regular gaming streamer or content creator with 2D or 3D avatar as their persona. Although they are called Vtuber, they are not only limited to one platform but several others such as Twitch, Tiktok and many more.

Their streams are quite flexible and do not only focus on gaming as they also listen to fans’ requests to do karaoke streams, ASMR, zatsudan (free talk with the viewers), collaborate with other streamers, etc.

They are mainly from Japan since it offers high-quality technology with Japanese animation style, also known as anime, with many fans worldwide. Anime fans are primarily male, which contributes to the big number of most subscribed Vtubers are mostly girls.

The most subscribed girl Vtuber is Gawr Gura from Hololive who has an avatar of an ancient shark with a total of 3.94m subscribers on Youtube.

Although male Vtuber do not have the same hype as female Vtuber but Kuzuha, a Japanese vampire Vtuber from a company named Nijisanji managed to achieve the highest subscribers on Youtube with a total 1.28million subscribers.

Meanwhile, Vox Akuma, a demon Vtuber from Nijisanji EN division managed to gain more than 200k subscribers on Youtube one month after his debut which shows male Vtubers also have their own charms.

With the vast and fast technology, now Vtubers have gained popularity in Malaysia and local companies like MyHolo TV and Projek Hikayat were founded with the objective to expand Vtuber entertainment especially to Malaysians.

According to Malaykini, Projek Hikayat mentioned that they were established to provide support in terms of technicalities and build secure platforms for their Vtubers.

The audiences do not just watch and support their favourite only because of their character designs. Behind the character’s design has their own interesting lore that goes hand in hand with their personality.

Siti Zulaika Zainal Abidin, 21, a student from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Puncak Alam, is a major admirer of Vtubers since she first met Kizuna Ai.

“I like their character the most. Each of them has their own lore, so within the lore, they can fit their personality based on the lore.

“I like Vtubers that can sing and if I want to say good at singing for Astel Leda is just an understatement,” she said in an interview with Berita DIMENSi through Google Meet.

Xavier Froste, 21, an independent Malaysian Vtuber shared his experience as a Vtuber that has now become his hobby only with his laptop as his setup.

“For me, I think it is fun to have a character of me instead of my own face. It also helps people who do not like to show their face.

“The problem with being independent is you do not have a secretariat. Everything here is all on me. I am my own boss and my finances are my own pocket money,” he said in an interview with Berita DIMENSi through Google Meet.

Xavier observes the industry trend by making his own streaming scheduling and focus streaming on Twitch for two hours, which can last even longer. He always keeps a positive mind and wants to always have fun as a Vtuber especially when he is interacting with his audience and friends
