KUALA LUMPUR – Music has always been a form of expression, and later becoming a statement as people develop what they listen into their clothing.

This is because most of the time, people become attached to the message from the music they listen to and how the characters are portrayed in the music.

For example, if you are into a certain vintage musical culture, you are expected to carry a certain weight in your clothing that represents the culture.

Another example, hip-hop lovers are expected to wear chains and baggy pants.

Punk music lovers are expected to wear Dr Martens boots as a statement for their whole outfit.

In other cases, famous celebrities will influence the style of a certain music culture. For example, Kurt Cobain is the icon for Grunge, David Bowie for Rock, Sid Vicious for Punk and Bob Marley for Reggae.

Vintage collectors come from various backgrounds and ages and they keep on growing.

Berita DIMENSi had the chance to interview Ezuan Faiz, 23, about his vintage collections and how music has influenced how he dressed up and his mind.

“I believe that music from the late 90’s and early 2000’s has become a large part of my life,” he said via Facetime Video Call with Berita DIMENSi.

Ezuan, who is also the owner of Greenattic, an online vintage store, also has his own opinion on why a lot of people opt to express themselves through clothing.

“The best thing about wearing vintage is the way someone dresses up most of the time can represent how their mind works, but at the same time, wearing a band tee could mean everything and nothing. Just because you like the artwork of a tee doesn’t mean you have to fall in love with the band,” said Ezuan during the interview.

He believed that you should wear whatever you want if you feel good in it. It is also essential to know what ideology your outfit represents, so people will not get the wrong idea.

For example, wearing a band tee from Rage Against The Machine promotes a deep meaning because they are well known for their strong characters for voicing out on human rights.

Wearing a Wu-Tang Clan shirt can promote how hip hop culture stands against discrimination in the United States of America and how vocal they are in fighting for Black Lives Matter.

Boots, Boot cut pants, oversized tee, and vintage dresses had been a staple for vintage culture and recently had been given a new breath of life by the youngsters of the current generation.

Berita DIMENSi had the chance to interview Maryam Khalid, 22, a law student from a local university who is also into vintage aesthetics.

She remarked during an interview at Collab, a vintage store in Subang Jaya, that while vintage culture is becoming more popular, she feels it is a step forward in recognising and re-living the culture of the past, since without them, our music level would never reach the heights it is now.

“I can see that a lot of young people are starting to listen to and love songs that are older than their own age nowadays. This is good for vintage culture as it preserves what people had loved in the past,” said Maryam during the interview.

Vintage culture can never be separated from the most beautiful form of art in this world, which is music.

The more you are into vintage, the deeper you will fall in love with the origins of each piece.
