Gaming industry in Malaysia has successfully become a popular trend in society, especially among the younger generation as most of them are attracted to gaming and look up to professional gamers as inspiration.

For tertiary level students, the Movement Control Order (MCO) phase can be a challenging time as they strive to adapt to their surroundings and constraints.

According to the Health Gamer website, playing video games might give benefits to certain people, but it can also give bad influences and affect the players’ minds, bodies and work performances.

Nor Amrina Idris, 46, a counselling teacher, said that gaming culture does not bring any good to an individual’s personality as students who play video games too often will make them addicted and less focused with other matters besides the games.

“Gaming culture can have a bad impact on students as they will become addicted to the games, less focused on academics and their attitude will also change,” said Amrina in an interview with Berita DIMENSi via WhatsApp.

According to the article ‘Ketagihan Permainan Video (Video Game) Dan Kesihatan Mental Pelajar’, excessive use of video games can have a negative impact on students' health.

This activity can elicit a neurological response that gives the player a happy feeling and encourages them to keep playing.

Reward systems that offer virtual items such as weapons and armours or real prizes such as streaming video subscriptions make the game difficult to stop.

Students should not become overly obsessed with this game activity and should ensure that all daily activities are balanced.

Priority should be given to education to ensure that the teaching and learning processes in higher education institutions will not be jeopardised.
