Music genres are distinguished from musical form and musical style, which are occasionally applied simultaneously in practice.

Not only that, there are over ten music genres, including pop, rock, hip-hop, jazz, funk, Electronic Dance Music (EDM) and many more.

Pop is the most common genre that artists use when creating music because samples from this genre work well with any song and rhythm.

Most musicians or artists will combine a variety of music genres while creating a song or an album.

A music genre can be defined as unique musical compositions that are believed to belong to a tradition or set of conventions.

Well-known artists like Michael Jackson and Bangtan Boys (BTS) are famous for their songs that commonly use pop as their genre.

Sarah Nafisa, 20, a fan of BTS stated that songs from that K-pop group such as Dynamite and Butter received a good reaction worldwide since pop songs suit everyone's taste.

“Butter topped the Billboard US chart for a few consecutive weeks, defeating famous artists such as Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran while making history as the longest artist to top the chart,” she said during an interview with Berita DIMENSi via phone call.

However, heavy genres such as heavy metal, punk rock, and pop-rock are also notable genres that artists use.

No matter which country, the music industry will use the same genre whenever they produce music.

Rock groups from Malaysia, Wings are famous for their songs that mainly use heavy metal as their genre.

Abdul Rahim, 65, who grew up listening to rock songs by Wings, said that their music has never disappointed him ever since he started to be their fan.

“I started to listen to their first song in 1987, titled Belenggu Irama and I still remember the memory and how addicted that song was because the genre, rhythm, lyrics are so perfect and fresh,” said Rahim during an interview with Berita DIMENSi via phone call.

He added that famous groups from overseas such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stone are also famous for the same genre.

During their notorious time, rock was recognized as the top genre since it will be used during live concerts, the same as in Malaysia.

By knowing various types of genres, we can know the kind of music or song that suits our preference and which artist significantly presents the genre, and it is not wrong for us to try listening to another genre as well.
