SHAH ALAM: Hard work paid off for Universiti Malaya (UM) when it emerged as an overall champion for the National Chemical Engineering Symposium (NACES) 2022 and subsequently became the host house for NACES 2023.

Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam ranking fell quite a number compared to last year when announced as overall champion for NACES 2021.

Host house for NACES 2022, UiTM Shah Alam unveiling different kinds of competitions and the highest number of accumulation points throughout the competitions will become the next host house for NACES.

NACES is an annual event accentuating chemical engineering, inviting 17 universities including public and private universities.

The director of NACES 2022, Iman Fatini Fazli said this is neither UiTM nor UM's first time participating in NACES.

“Even though UiTM was the overall winner for NACES 2021, UM, however, came quite close. To witness that they (UM) won this year, proved that they really make every endeavour to tighten the gap.

“UiTM might not have many wins this year, but this is not mean our fight ends here because we have a lot of opportunity to tighten the gap between us,” said President of Sekretariat Mahasiswa Fakulti Pengajian Kejuruteraan Kimia (SMFPKK) UiTM Shah Alam.

The competition has eight categories: Technical Case Study, Chemical Engineering Challenge, Technical Debate Competition, Technical Essay Competition, Infographic Competition, Plant Design Competition, Technical Video Competition and Technical Presentation Competition.

UM has won 7 titles in 6 different categories (Champion for Technical Essay Competition and Chemical Engineering Challenge, 1st runner up for Technical Case Study Competition and Technical Debate Competition and 2nd runner up for Technical Video Competition, Technical Presentation and Chemical Engineering Challenge Competition).

UiTM, on the other hand has won 2 titles in 2 different categories (Technical Debate Competition and Technical Presentation Competition).

Sharing her thoughts on winning the competition, Lau En Xin, the champion of the Chemical Engineering Challenge, from UM said that she was not expecting to win the competition.

“Most of the question scopes were from the syllabus that I have not covered because I just started my third semester by that time, which made me initially quite stressed and panicked.

“Since names and scores kept cropping up during the Kahoot session, I found the competition to be intensely tough, especially for the unexpected subjective questions. It was interesting, though,” she said.

She also mentioned that at the moment UM was announced as the overall champion, they could see great happiness in their members’ eyes as they knew how each other went through the preparations.

“I know they suffered a lot and I am really proud of our achievements,” she expressed her feeling.

NACES 2022 organized by SMFPKK, collaborating with the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) lasted for 3 days since 24 last November.
