SHAH ALAM: Lecturers at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam have issued a stern warning to students, reminding them of the serious consequences of plagiarism.

Muhd Fadhil Marsidiyono, 23, an engineering student at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam shared that during the first year of his diploma studies, his lecturer once personally texted him for committing an academic misconduct which he had copied work from another source.

"I was astonished because I did it unintentionally. I copied and pasted content from other people's websites without giving them any credit or recognition because I mistakenly believed that the Internet was a shared resource.

"I had no idea how to express my opinions, as my English was subpar at the time and I had never attended tertiary education,” Fadhli added.

He was instructed by his professor on the necessity of respecting copyrighted resources and the negative effects of plagiarism before having to redo the assignment.

Senior Lecturer UiTM Faculty of Sport and Recreation Science,  Associate Professor Dr. Rezianna Kassim

According to Senior Lecturer of UiTM Faculty of Sport and Recreation Science, Associate Professor Dr. Rezianna Kassim, cutting and pasting content from a source without providing an appropriate citation, making use of another person's ideas or research without giving due credit, or even employing a third party to produce a report or project are considered plagiarism.

“Plagiarism is considered a form of academic dishonesty and can lead to serious consequences, including failing grades, expulsion from school, and damage to a person's reputation,” she said.

This statement is supported by the book Understanding Plagiarism: A Guide for Lecturers, which outlines the UiTM Plagiarism policy on Section 8A of the Education Institutions (Discipline) Act 176, which came into force in December 2010.

It outlines different types of plagiarism written and published by the Institute of Quality & Knowledge Advancement (InQKA).

“We read a lot about the topic because we are experts in the field. When instructors encounter a text that contains highly recognisable theories, information, or published findings, they frequently recall having previously read the material,” Rezianna added.

Senior Lecturer of Language Studies, UiTM, Doreen Azlina Ab Rahman

UiTM’s Senior lecturer of the Academy of Language Studies (APB), Doreen Azlina Ab Rahman revealed that one of her former students had her degree revoked for plagiarism.

“The student received such a serious punishment since the assignment was a direct copy of another student's work from the previous semester for the same two subjects.

“Beforehand, the student received a failing score on an assignment from the previous semester, and then the semester was barred due to repeated acts of plagiarism,” she added.

Doreen advised and encouraged her students to submit a simple and concise essay for their academic writing tasks rather than submitting an essay with over 1000 words of plagiarized content.

The academic integrity and reputation of both students and teachers can be protected by ensuring that all work is properly cited and is completely original.

It is crucial for both parties to be aware of the hazards of plagiarism and to take precautions to prevent it.
