SHAH ALAM: 11 students from the School of Communication and Media in the College of Computing, Informatics, and Media at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam visited Indonesia in November to learn about the country's media industry.

According to the Project Director, Muhamad Azib Zikry, they took a big step by choosing Jakarta as the first place for the colloquium to be held after 2 years online.

"Jakarta is one of the countries closest to Malaysia, and I think that is the right choice because we have no communication problems,” he said.

Universitas Indonesia (UI) and Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) are the best journalism universities in Asia, so they will not miss the opportunity to see and learn, especially about the way the Indonesian media works and their culture.

The assistant director, Nur Aqilah Dahalan, mentioned that the colloquium this time was themed UiTM Journiepedia: The Garuda Series, which aims for us to get to know foreign journalism.

“'UiTM Journiepedia: Garuda Series ASEAN Outreach Programme' visited journalism schools and newsrooms at UI, CNN Indonesia, and iNews TV station in Jakarta.

“Trips like this help journalism students gather experience and gain knowledge for the future in the media industry.” she added.

Logistician and special task expert, Faiqah Nasuha, stated that the preparation to Jakarta was initially very difficult and tiring because the work of the logistics department was delayed while waiting for the paperwork to be approved.

She added that they see that as a challenge before they have the opportunity to observe and learn the differences in the media prevalent in Malaysia and Indonesia.

UM has won 7 titles in 6 different categories (Champion for Technical Essay Competition and Chemical Engineering Challenge, 1st runner up for Technical Case Study Competition and Technical Debate Competition and 2nd runner up for Technical Video Competition, Technical Presentation and Chemical Engineering Challenge Competition).

UiTM, on the other hand has won 2 titles in 2 different categories (Technical Debate Competition and Technical Presentation Competition).

Sharing her thoughts on winning the competition, Lau En Xin, the champion of the Chemical Engineering Challenge, from UM said that she was not expecting to win the competition.

“A blended learning strategy is employed with university students in Indonesia, benefiting both groups by introducing them to new teaching methods and building mutual understanding,” she said.

A part of that, National Journalism Student Convention (NJSC) was an innovative approach to bringing together journalism students from around the world at the colloquium.

The establishment of NJSC is the first journalism student convention in the country to include activities to improve journalist talent, such as a pitching competition, that will involve students from various institutions.

They also held a journalism colloquium by inviting distinguished panels from the media and journalism industries to discuss current issues related to the world of journalism and media.
