"The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making."
I believe that authentic assessment is a fantastic way to gauge student progress and knowledge, especially for students who do not test well. It allows for an alternative way of collecting data and giving students an opportunity to show their strengths. One of my favorite summative, authentic assessments to conduct with my students is Socratic Seminar.
For this specific Socratic Seminar, students got to choose between two questions related to Human Rights and the Progressive Era. All classes chose the question focused on the working conditions of the time. Most of the discussion was directed towards how working conditions have changed throughout time, and where in the world working conditions could be improved.
I found that Socratic Seminar was incredibly effective and an excellent way to track student progress. The students who participated were engaged and excited to participate. They also made connections and found relevancy in the topics they chose. It was different for every single class where the discussions led, and was academically challenging and rigorous in an equitable way for all students.
The skills needed to complete a Socratic Seminar are critical thinking, research, writing, and communication. This assessment encourages and provides opportunities in these skill areas for student development and growth. It also teaches them to accept perspectives and ideas that they may not agree with, and how to handle conflict in a productive manner.
This is the rubric students were given when the multimedia project was introduced at the end of the unit. Students were also given a paper/pencil test, but the authentic assessment carried more weight with their grade. Students were given time in class to complete the project. Students were required to write a summative paragraph of their findings and knowledge to answer the following question in a Socratic Seminar: "Who should be responsible for maintaining safety conditions in the workplace?"
This student chose to create a video based on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire for their multimedia project.
This student chose to create a newspaper about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire.
