"The teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals, and community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the profession."
At the 2022 National AMLE Conference, I had the opportunity to serve as a Student Ambassador. This experience allowed me to volunteer at the conference, helping with session set-up, registration, attendee questions, and more. I was able to participate in several exclusive events, such as dinner with AMLE Board of Trustees and an outing with well known middle-level educators Rick Wormeli and Joseph Pizzo.
The program was coordinated by AMLE CEO Stephanie Simpson, Partnerships Manager Helen Polansky, and member Gail Heinemeyer. Ambassador candidates were required to apply through AMLE with a letter of recommendation from their CMLA advisor and an essay. 18 teacher candidates across the country were chosen to serve as Ambassadors.
I can say confidently that this has been the best professional development/opportunity I have ever experienced. Not only did I have an amazing time working with other passionate, pre-service middle level teachers, but I was able to have unique, empowering experiences through the Ambassador program. I was able to network with several Educators of the Year, award winning authors, Keynote speakers, and many more. I made connections with my fellow Ambassadors and still communicate with regularly, personally and professionally. I am currently in contact with the coordinators of the Ambassador program to serve as a mentor to Ambassadors next year as well!
