Having worked in education for over 20 years, I have picked up a lot of unique skills from a lot of very interesting experiences. On a regular basis, I still use ideas I learned from all of them, whether it is an ice breaking activity I learned from 12 year old kids when I was a camp counselor at age 19, or an interactive learning tool I just figured out in H5P doing my current instructional design job, it all comes into play.
Most of my career has been designing and implementing memorable learning experiences as a Visual Arts teacher. It took a constant effort to be creative in the activities I organized, as well as how to fit it all into a budget, schedule, and and set of definable learning goals. I made a switch into the world of Instructional Design, because that is where I saw the most interesting growth and opportunity in the world of education. I am a firm believer in the power of online education to deliver meaningful, humanistic, and relatable educational experiences. It is a lot of work, and the tools we use still have room to grow, but it is very exciting to be in the midst of this kind of educational evolution.
