In the XIX. century most of the traditional cap tins factory was located in England. Besides a few American and European cap makers, they use almost the same size and type of tins for selling caps. Caps can be bough and packed by bags, tins, and bulk. Usually cap tins can hold 100, 250 and 500 caps. Cap tins often packaged in an extra layer of paper, which also had the same label as on their tin. Some early cap "tin" made from paper, but these were uncommon, and people didn't like them very much because the caps inside often did not work after some time because of the dampness..

The following cap tin sizes were the most commonly used. Of course, some different sizes also exist, but this was not so common in the USA. In England, larger diameter but flatter tins (for example 65 x 16 mm, 67 x 34 mm) for the 250 and 500 pcs cap was more common.

• Early tins made from iron sheet, have beading top and bottom, also their cylindrical shape was soldered from a simple metal sheet. These type of tins are jappened, and have a round label at their top and/or bottom, and also on their cylindrical body.
