TRYOUTS ARE OPEN FOR THE 2025-26 SEASON.
Dear Cheer Candidates and Parents/Guardians
Thank you for your interest in trying out for the 2025-26 Black Canyon Middle School Cheer Squad.
While deciding whether or not to be part of our program, please remember and consider the time commitment this sport will require from both student and parent. This commitment begins the MOMENT you make the team. Your commitment will involve active participation in summer practices (up to two times weekly) during school year early morning practices (up to 2 times weekly), tumbling practice (1 time weekly), assemblies, summer practices and choreography camp, fund raising, team bonding, community service activities, weekly games (basketball- one to two times weekly), two competitions on Fridays or Saturdays starting in December, and performing at High School basketball games.
Cheerleading is a sport that does require a financial commitment. We will do our best to keep prices around $1,200 or less for the season. We will offer monthly payments options. Upon making the team the first $250 is due by May 5th, this covers our first stunt camp and some of our practice gear.
POSSIBLE CHEER EVENTS TO LOOK FORWARD TO THIS YEAR:
Cheer unity, halftime, BCMS assemblies, cheering at basketball games, up to 3 cheer competitions, and performing at high school basketball games.

Practices will be held at Black Canyon gym on Monday's &Wednesdays from 7am-9am unless otherwise directed. If you make the team you will need to give the coaches your summer vacation schedule within 2 weeks. The week of August 11th begins our regular season practices. There are no practices from June 28th - August 10th. We have show choreography June 3rd from 10am-5pm ( there will be a 1hr break) Also June 4th is Show Choreo. from 4:30pm-9pm. We have Pom choreography June 9th &10th from 10-1pm. You will get the month of July off.
TUMBLING: If you are selected to be on the cheer team, it is mandatory to attend classes as a team taught by Ashley. You will be placed into classes according to your skill level. These classes run on Tuesdays from June-December. These tumbling classes are not part of your cheer fees and will be paid separately. You are welcome to take additional tumbling classes of your choice as well.
GAMES: Middle school basketball has two games per night (7th and 8th) and up to two home games per week.. We usually do not travel to away games (with the exception of some tournament games). The cheer team will be separated into two teams to cheer at these events.
FUNDRAISING: We will have some fundraisers during the season to help you pay for your fees. Generally most athletes pay off at least 50% of their fees just with sponsors. We also have a "help sponsor my uniform" fundraising, an option about a "calendar fundraiser." we hope to do this year. Parents are also welcome to do any other fundraising they wish. We rely on a lot of parents to help with Fundrasing! We need to find another team fundrasing for this year and would love your input.
STORM CHEER PARENT: Being a parent of a cheerleader is also a huge commitment for you. Much is asked including early mornings, meal sign ups, competition help, holiday help, unity activities, supporting your cheerleader at games and competitions. We can not be successful as a team without our parents.
UNITY ACTIVITIES: Unity is very important for any sport, because of the amount of time spent together. Our goal is four to five activities for the season and will be mostly put on by parents. We will have a sign up sheet for parents/guardians to choose an activity. We recommend pairing with other parent(s)/guardian(s) to lighten the load. Examples of these are dinners, bbq’s, art classes, axe throwing, dance classes, tie dye shirt making, Minute To Win it, scavenger hunts, cabin retreats etc.
COMPETITIONS/MAKING MAT: Everyone who makes the team is guaranteed the opportunity to cheer at games, and participate in assemblies as long as all other requirements are met (cheerleader knows material, comes to practice, follows school rules etc.). However not everyone on the team will “make mat” for competitions. The decision depends solely on coaches discretion and is based on skill, ability and commitment level. If your athlete is not chosen to be on the mat for routines they are considered an “alternate.” Alternates are required to learn and know all material as they can be put on the mat at a moment's notice.
EXPECTED COMMITMENT: Please understand cheerleading is a MAJOR commitment that lasts about 10 months. While we do allow participation in other sports, dance teams, you must do so with the understanding that BCMS cheer is FIRST priority. If you miss competitions, performances or multiple practices, it is highly possible you will be removed from ALL routines. If you can NOT commit to making cheer your FIRST priority then this sport is not one to take on. We do our best to work with other coaches and create a practice/competition schedule that benefits everyone but can not guarantee it. Please chat with us before tryouts about your specific situation if you have any concerns.
TRYOUTS JUDGING: Current coaches DO NOT judge tryouts. We will be bringing in guest judges who will be evaluating and scoring. This is to ensure impartial and unbiased scores. Current coaches WILL be in the room and taking notes. Coaches will then tabulate tryout scores and also add a point value for teacher recommendations, behavior and attitude, coachability, and work ethic during tryouts. Scores are completely confidential and will not be shown to parents. However we are happy to answer any questions regarding your own child's tryouts.
