The main goal of the Compost Garden is to highlight four of the more basic and common types of compost options available for the backyard gardener. On display the garden offers a hands on options from the least expensive basic open stack composter, to a multi bin composter, to a covered composter to a more complex barrel type composter. By displaying these composting options gardeners can consider the amount time and space required for the different types of composters available to home gardeners. On site we have signage and handouts to explain the composting process and to encourage gardeners to consider additional composting options such as vermiculture.
The compost garden offers classes throughout the growing seasons to encourage people to consider backyard composting and to ask questions and work through challenges they may be experiencing.
The Compost Garden is also a full functioning compost collection site for all of the gardens, within the Demonstration Garden to use in recycling their green and brown matter. Closed top composters have been placed near each garden to encourage composting, to remind everyone that composting is easy, takes very little space, does not smell and everyone can participate. This allows the compost team to collect and process the organic remains into our different composters and we will use the finished compost later in the gardens.
