The short answers that I received, I coded for Awareness, Support, and Respect.
“Generally, make things more known to students so that those who need to rely on these resources can do so without having to 'dig."
“I would spread the word as much as possible for these amenities; they are very important.”
“More signage pointing out where support can be found.”
“Let the EvCC Foundation donors know this is a major concern on campus.”
“In the past, it was not even knowing about resources I could have tapped into, and in some cases, not having those resources near enough to me, proximity-wise, to get to them even if I DID know about them. Having a better link between outside services and internal (College) support to know about those services.”
“I would increase the visibility -- I'd venture as far as to say that most students are not aware of the extent of the resources that the college offers, and the college generally struggles with communication in this regard.”
“Not sure if there is any, but to increase awareness and accessibility of mental health resources for students.”
“There should be someone, like a tutor, who can sit and help students while filling out various school/financial forms.”
“Financial aid is very difficult to navigate to pay for housing & food.”
“For staff to not have a judgy tone when asking for help.”
“I appreciate everything this school does for its students. As a U3 student, I didn't expect to even get into college to begin with, let alone for so many people on campus to care about my well-being.”
Housing support
“Have a housing office to help students find housing.”
“More resources for people who are unhoused.
“More parking and overnight parking, I have known some students who were sleeping in their cars, and overnight safe parking would have benefited them greatly.”
Financial Accessibility
“More open-source textbooks instead of expensive textbooks.”
Food Support
“When I went to the food pantry, it was empty :(“
“More clothes, extra food”
“Open the cafeteria to have food that is financially accessible to students/staff.”
“Having a food pantry in different buildings on campus, and not just the main building where the bookstore is, makes it more accessible. The pantries don't have to be huge, just big enough to have a decent meal for those who need it, and also, to have the food pantry refilled daily.”
“Offer classes on campus, free of charge, on how to prepare nutritious meals from the EvCC food pantry and local food banks. Distribute printed material with easy recipes. List ALL local food banks and organizations that provide food, clothing, and financial assistance, i.e., Volunteers of America, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Union Gospel Mission, etc. Thank you for asking for my input!!
“It would be nice to provide healthier and more food options in the vending machines on campus. Maybe reduce the price $1 or so or offer some type of food gift card for students in need”
“I have received resources (Kindred Kitchen, BFET program) these resources have provided me with funds for my books and meals after school, therefore l feel these programs have enhanced my success at EvCC”
Parental Resources
“Support for full-time working parents.”
“More help with finding childcare”
"Keep ELC open."
Academic Support
“More availability from my academic advisor. Not enough help with class information, academic planning, and registration.
“More flexible classes (live online lectures with in-person labs and stuff like that). I have to work full time to pay bills, and the commuting time to and from EVCC takes up a significant portion of the day and is cutting into how many files I can take on. I currently have bills paid but am officially out of savings.”
