This research aims to increase awareness of basic needs insecurity within Everett Community College, aiding in the implementation of better policy decisions regarding student wellbeing by determining current resources available compared to the general need for more funding for these programs.
According to the statewide Student Experience Survey administered by Western Washington University, over half of all students face some form of basic need insecurity, 43.8% reported being food insecure, 33.9% reported housing insecurity, and 26.4% reported insecurities in both housing and food. The estimated percentage of students who are homeless was over 11% in 2023 measurements. I, Moss Martin, a student researcher at Everett Community College, wanted to compare our individual school numbers with those of the state as a whole. I conducted a survey through Canvas over the course of 11 days and received a total of 100 responses.
