Deep budget cuts to the Department of Education have been proposed by this current presidential administration, which may have a serious impact on student success. Currently, on the chopping block are: TRiO, Adult Basic Education, Federal Subsidized loans for students, and Workstudy. According to Inside Higher Ed, this administration has intended cuts to the Department of Education in the sum of $12 billion for the fiscal year of 2026.
This will deeply impact enrollment for these colleges and potentially lead to the demise of our educational institutions, let alone their ability to assist with student needs. As I am writing this, I am sure that there will be more terrible things that I have not covered related to the current political administration's attack on public education.
TRiO Student Support Services
TRiO is a Student Support Service which originated in the 1960s to create more equitable student outcomes for first-generation college, low-income, and disabled students. This program has been proven to work wonders in bringing up completion and transfer rates for these individuals. Said one participant about their involvement with the TRiO program, "(insert quote here) ". Without this vital resource, students will be left with no roadmap or guide to navigate college life. The services TRiO currently provides are:
Personalized one-on-one academic planning and goal setting
Transfer advising
Major choice and career advising
Tutoring for specified courses
Visits to local 4-year colleges and universities
Scholarship and financial aid resources
Cultural and Educational Events
Adult Basic Education
" Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) pairs adult basic education and English language instructors together with professional-technical instructors to help you develop a combination of skills. In I-BEST, you can further your education and get workforce ready at the same time."
This vital resource for non-traditional and international students helps get them ready to enter the workforce and move on to higher learning prospects. By cutting this program, this administration is directly cutting the public's constitutional right to the pursuit of happiness, and with devastating effects to the economy.
