Everett Community College strives towards equitable outcomes for its students and lays out its strategic goals to align with the needs of marginalized students. Their strategic plan for student success is built with social justice in mind.
Belonging
"Establish structures and practices that promote student development of social and academic belonging."
"Develop and nurture an inclusive and equitable campus culture."
Student Readiness
"Build an intentional and supportive environment for students that reinforces that every student is known, respected, and valued."
"Establish balanced modes of delivery to meet varying and diverse student needs."
EvCC backs up these claims with a robust Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice department and a wide variety of services and funding options for students who are economically disadvantaged.
Despite efforts to work towards equitable outcomes for students, student aid is not enough to get by. Many individuals hold multiple jobs while attending, yet are barely scraping by. By spending valuable study hours at minimum wage jobs, they fall behind in their studies, potentially leaving school altogether because the financial burden of education becomes too great. To ensure better outcomes for all of our students, we must strengthen the institutions that support our students who are struggling financially, and strong action must be taken to find community support for students who are experiencing homelessness.
One student suggestion, which would not be expensive to undertake, would be allowing "overnight parking, I have known some students who were sleeping in their cars, and overnight safe parking would have benefited them greatly.” Many student suggestions were centered on not having enough awareness of the support that EvCC offers. Said one student, "In the past, it was not even knowing about resources I could have tapped into, and in some cases not having those resources near enough to me, proximity-wise to get to them even if I DID know about them. Having a better link between outside services and internal (College) support to know about those services.”
