The Breaking Point: When the Old Way Stops Working
Where: Baraboo Public Library — Sauey Room
About This Session
Every character has a way of getting through things.
They avoid. They argue. They stay quiet. They take control. They run. They try harder. They fall back on whatever has worked before.
Until it doesn't.
In The Breaking Point, we'll take the patterns and old methods we've been exploring and put them under pressure. Through guided writing, creative exercises, and plenty of room to follow the story, we'll discover what happens when a character's familiar way of handling things finally fails.
This isn't necessarily the biggest explosion in the story. A breaking point can be loud—or almost invisible. What matters is that something can no longer continue in quite the same way.
What We'll Explore
Pressure Building: What keeps pushing against the character's old way of handling things?
The Last Attempt: What happens when they try the familiar method one more time?
The Breaking Point: Find the moment when the old answer simply isn't enough anymore.
The New Question: When the old way fails, what does the character have to ask, face, or consider for the first time?
What to Bring
Bring your preferred writing tools—a notebook and pen, laptop, or whatever lets you write comfortably.
You may bring the character, chapter, pattern, or story you explored in Old Methods: The Patterns We Repeat.
Or come with something completely different.
Every session stands on its own. New and returning writers are equally welcome.
Fiction, creative nonfiction, memoir—and anything that refuses to fit neatly into a box—are welcome.
Come find the moment when the old way stops working—and see what your story does
