Light vs. darkness. Nature vs. technology. Fate vs. destiny. The underlying themes of “Star Wars” are woven into the story, giving it meaning.

And while yearbook themes are not quite as dramatic, they do follow the same Star Wars logic. A theme is the central message of a yearbook, with elements working together to support it. To develop a yearbook theme, let’s begin with a little Jedi yearbook training.

New year, new cover, new theme. Fall is an exciting time of year because we’re brimming with ideas for the new book. But we don’t want to forget the basics, those little things that are essential in every book. So, let’s dot our I’s and cross our T’s to make sure we include all the yearbook must-haves.

Theme is the glue that holds a book together.

Expressed through a word or phrase, a theme is a unified concept that runs throughout a yearbook. Presented visually and verbally, it sets the tone for the entire book. It inspires the volume’s look and feel.


With classes, clubs and sports back in action, there’s no time to lose. We need to train our yearbook troops and get them out in the field. If you’re like most yearbook staffs, you have a few newbies who need to learn the difference between a pica and a pixel.

Being organized can make a huge difference with staying on deadline and keeping your sanity. Keep track of important documents and info by posting items around the room or filing in a binder.
