The purpose of collecting data in this case study is to analyze the economic impact of tourism on the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum over the past five years. By gathering information on total number of visitors, total revenue, and the number of employees, we aim to understand the trends and dynamics of museum operations, assess the financial health of the museum, and identify potential areas for growth and improvement.
In our case study, we utilize both primary and secondary data to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the performance of the Malacca Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum over the past five years.
Source: Interview Sessions with the Museum Employee
Primary data is collected through structured interviews with the employee of the Baba Nyonya Museum. The interview provides us the qualitative input about the total revenue generated for the museum in 2023. However, due to incomplete financial records for the remaining 4 years (2019-2022), we have performed our own calculations to estimate the total revenue for each of these years. These estimations are based on available data and relevant assumptions about visitor numbers.
......................................................................................
Impact of COVID-19: The line graph clearly shows the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the museum’s revenue in 2020 and 2021 with a sharp drop from RM1,020,725 in 2019 to only RM20,256 in 2021.
Recovery Phase: There is a marked recovery trend in 2022 to RM525,439 and a substantial rebound in 2023.
Resilience: The sharp recovery in 2023 that drives the revenue to its highest among the last 5 years at RM1,299,682 indicates resilience and effective recovery strategies for the post-pandemic, demonstrating the museum’s ability to bounce back after a major disruption.
Source: Statistics from the Museum's Internal Database
Secondary data is derived from the internal database maintained by the museum's secretary. This data includes quantitative information such as the total number of visitors, and the total number of employees over the past five years from the year 2019 to 2023. The secondary data provides a solid empirical foundation for analyzing trends and patterns in the number of visitors and employees for the last 5 years.
The data for the number of visitors to the Baba Nyonya Museum from 2019 to 2023 shows significant fluctuations, reflecting the impacts of various external factors, notably the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2019, the museum had a strong year with 59,310 visitors, reflecting stable tourism and cultural interest. However, there was a sharp decline in 2020 to 8,424 visitors due to global travel restrictions, lockdowns, and COVID-19 health concerns. In 2021, the visitor count further dropped to its lowest at 1,177, reflecting the severe impacts of continued travel bans and local restrictions. The museum saw a substantial recovery in 2022 with 30,531 visitors. This rebound can be linked to the relaxation of travel restrictions and a revival in domestic and international tourism. In 2023, the visitor count surged to 75,519, surpassing pre-pandemic visitors. This surge indicates a strong resurgence in tourism, possibly driven by pent-up travel demand, effective marketing strategies, and enhanced tourist attractions at the museum.
The number of employees at the Baba Nyonya Museum over the period from 2019 to 2023 shows a slight reduction trend from 7 to 5 employees. This indicates that the museum is operating on a small scale.
