Theory into practice:

Preparing In-Service Teachers

As a school leader, you may wonder how you can ensure teachers are using High-Leverage Practices to effectively and efficiently reach students. Below are several steps to guide you through the process:

  • Align the HLPs with expected standards, school initiatives, missions, and/or professional development curriculum. It may be helpful to focus on a select few HLPs (signature HLPs) that most align with your school or districts mission and/or based on teacher performance data. This may be easier than addressing all 22. These can also be aligned to MTSS structures and processes.

  • Once selected and aligned, provide comprehensive knowledge to educators around the HLPs. You may want to stress that these are not new practices, but rather a select "best of the best" that have proven to give educators the most "bang for their buck".

  • Guide teachers in identifying HLPs in action. Watch the HLP videos to demonstrate application of the HLPs. Seek out exemplar teachers at your school or throughout the district and video-tape them in action. Use these videos to set new teachers on the right track. Allow in-service teachers to watch these highly effective teachers, using an HLP analysis tool for reflection.

  • Start using and embedding the HLP vocabulary into professional development opportunities, school websites, school meetings, discussions, etc...

  • Use the Learning Walk process and tools (next tab) to reinforce the use of HLPs in the classroom.

  • Align evaluation tools with HLPs. This will help when debriefing with teachers after an observation. Focusing on a few key HLPs within an improvement plan can increase the likely hood of success and lead to improved outcomes for ALL students. Data can also be gathered from these evaluations that can drive future professional development around HLPs. In-Service teachers can collect artifacts to demonstrate their proficiency at using the HLPs.
