I made my first "Doodle Card" on February x, 2021.
It was completely hand-drawn.
What can I say? I am just a little bit OCD when it comes to record-keeping. The "Hybrid Horse" card is the first ATC that I have designed specifically for printing as a "coloring card." Since 2026 is the Year of the Horse, I wanted a design that featured horses, but I also wanted the design to have my signature style. I went to Wikipedia to acquire an image of the famous "joined horses." I drew four different versions of the card before I cam up with my favorite.
I traced over the original, ancient, Wikipedia jpeg file to created a line drawing. The first version looked a little too plain, so I tried it again, drawing thicker lines.
Finally, I decided to try adding a dotted background.
These first three cards were published on my website on January 7.
You never really know if a "doodle card" is going to work until you COLOR it.
So I colored two cards and put them on the web page too.
Unfortunately, I got excited about another project, which involved paint...
I accidentally dripped red paint on BOTH of those original cards, so they were not only un-trade-able, but also too badly damaged to use as "demo cards."
So I needed to make more Hybrid Horses.
On January 10 I made the first "Hybrid Horse" card that I really love. I took photos to document the process.
It took me seven minutes to add the first 640 dots, with Ohuhu GY1.
Nine minutes later, I had completed the second round of dots, using Ohuhu G2.
Five minutes later the coloring part of the card was finished. Color numbers were recorded so that I have a record of this particular color combination. I really like this version.
My printer will only take thin cardstock, so every hybrid card needs to have a backing added. It's my least favorite part of the process.
