Because the gatherings are large, often unpermitted, and held on public land, they regularly attract the attention of local news, law enforcement and neighbouring communities. This section collects that outside view across nearly four decades. It includes local TV reports on the gathering's arrival and cleanup, discussions of its impact on small towns, encounters with the Forest Service and police, and coverage of crimes and allegations connected to the events. Some reports are sympathetic and others are critical. Read alongside the rest of the collection, they show the ongoing tension between the gathering's ideals and the practical concerns of the places that host it.
