No Pasaran! is a documentary set to music that commemorates the International Brigade volunteers and others who fought against fascism in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) who were organised by the Communist Parties around the world. Many never came back, others only just escaped the fascist death squads, and thousands of working class Spanish people died after Franco, supported by Hitler and Mussolini, had finally overrun Madrid.
Why do we still commemorate the International Brigades and the others who went there to help? Because it was a selfless commitment, a righteous commitment, and a brave one. Thousands of men and women from many countries climbed over the Pyrenees and arrived in Spain where they were poorly equipped and badly fed, but material shortages did not inhibit them from fighting fascism.
The bravery of the volunteers and the Spanish working class who fought against Franco showed how our collective strength can be organised despite our political differences and that we all have the same goal: to stamp out fascism wherever it appears.
