Welcome to Fifth Grade! Bienvenidos a Quinto Grado!
Let's Learn about Wetland Bids! ¡Aprendamos sobre las aves humedal!
Fifth grade students in the Aves Compartidas program focused on wetland and aquatic migratory bird species. Over five weeks, lessons on habitat, adaptations, and threats to migration taught students how to synthesize and compile information on bird species, and educated them on the benefits both ecologically and culturally of wetland migratory birds.
Each of our students was supported and guided in creating a poster of information on one of our highlighted bird species. Each student was assigned a specific bird to focus and study. Some of the birds that students deeply investigated include the bufflehead duck, ring necked duck, marsh wren, lesser scaup, and the green heron. At the end of our curriculum, students celebrated their hard work and displayed their knowledge through a gallery of their projects and practice teaching others on the bird that they learned about.
Our fifth-grade field trip implemented skills from the classroom into action in the field, where a day at Mt. Pisgah arboretum supported them in identifying the birds we studied. Guided nature walks through the arboretum got students engaged with the environment and habitat. Students used binoculars and practiced spotting, listening, and identifying bird species and reflect on the journey that migratory birds have taken to arrive at Mt. Pisgah.
