Virtual and Augmented Reality

HW1: Google translate

how Do you think this capability would be most effectively used?

I believe that this technology would be most effective when used in traveling. A lot of individuals do not speak more than one language and the ability to freely explore a new country would open up a lot of possibilities for exploration and new connections. This technology would allow users to understand a language they do not understand. It could also be useful for businesses, such as when companies that are only based in one country are able to use this technology to branch out and connect to other businesses. On a smaller scale, this technology can be used for a new immigrant to help navigate through their new country. Another example would be when a consumer that purchased an item online, only has foreign instructions that they cannot interpret. All in all, this technology would be most beneficial in any relationship where there is a language barrier, not only romantically but also between families.

Pros and Cons

The obvious pros would be, as I have said before, traveling and also learning a new language. This could be easier because an individual would be able to see the translations in real time. The cons would be a bit similar to the pros in that there would not be any incentive on learning a new language. Google translate also is not perfect and a lot is lost in translation therefore the many cultural quips that make give language life would be non-existent.

In terms of augmented reality and Google Glass, your data could be easily hacked and your privacy could be compromised. If we were to advance technology where Google Glass could find information based on that persons face, privacy would be non-existent and every individual should have this basic right. We would never be given the chance to make first impressions and that's how we get to know people we don’t usually interact with. Its similar to that of the Black Mirror episode where everyone would be rated by each other and everyone can see your ranking. This technology could also create a smaller world which could be beneficial because individuals would be more interconnected but also bad because how we interact with each other would change. As humans, we need social interactions and meeting new people could become more difficult if we already knew everything about them without actually knowing them.

How much control do you think the user should have over the way the synthetic is mapped over the real?

I believe the user should have full control of everything that comes through synthetically. I believe that in the future with augmented reality, ads would become commonplace in the synthetically created view. If this were true, then the user would not have control over the ads that they see. This is due to the fact that Google uses our data to create ads specifically for a particular user and yes, ad block is something that could be used however, if the product is made by Google the option would not be possible.
