Diversity of Outcome

9. Authentic activities are open-ended allowing competing solutions and diversity of outcome

Real world relevant problems have ill-defined structures and do not have a distinct, clear solution that can be anticipated at the beginning of an activity. Van Lier (2007) suggests that each learner should be treated as a unique entity and should be given opportunities to share their opinions. In authentic activities learners need to spend mental and interactional effort over a sustained period of time and employ a variety of decision-making procedures in order to be able to suggest their own solution. All this process will require the learners to use the target language in context for authentic communication.
