Authentic Learning

Authentic Learning

Authentic learning aims at giving students skills that can be used outside the school. It is based on the activities that are derived from real-world situations, such as local, global, career or work related problems, and has resonance beyond the classroom. Such learning designs can only be achieved if learning activities have the characteristics of authentic activities suggested by, for example, Herrington, Reeves and Oliver (2010), Ozverir, Herrington and Osam (2016) or Pais Marden and Herrington (2020). This course is based on the 11 design principles for authentic activities in EFL suggested by Ozverir, Herrington and Osam (2016) and Ozverir, Osam and Herrington (2017) and argue that appropriate implementation of these characteristics have the potential of providing necessary conditions for language acquisition to occur in EFL contexts.

In this short video, Prof. Dr. Jan Herrington is explaining what is and what is not authentic learning. More information can be found here.
