I was given the amazing opportunity to be able to help those at Watauga High School who suffer from physical and mental disabilities. I was able to work with the teachers and students for one afternoon. My main job was to help them in any way they needed me to. I was able to meet amazing children who are so resilient. This changed my life and made me realize that helping others is something that I want to do. It gave me a sense of pride to be able to put a smile on all those kid's faces. There was one child named Austin who impacted me most of all. He was not able to speak or move but when we were outside racing around that track I have never seen a bigger smile on anyone's face and that made me the happiest of all.

Children enjoying the outdoors.
This is the track where for one day I was able to make an impact on one young man's life. His name was Austin and he was apart of the special education class that I had the opportunity to go and help out for the afternoon. Austin was not able to speak or move on his own but what he was able to do was smile and he sure did that. The class went down to the track for outside time where they spend time walking around the track and enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. While we were outside the gym class had come outside as well to run laps for their class. Austin saw all those kids running and he wanted to be right there with him. What started out as a nice walk quickly turned into a jog.
There was a point when the gym class was done running and we were on our final lap before we had to go back inside. It was a race to the finish line at this point. The gym class had set up a finish line for us and they were cheering him on as the band was playing in the background. Austin and I were neck and neck and when he pulled ahead at the end the gym class erupted and the band started playing so loud and then the best thing happened. Austin had the biggest smile on his face that I had ever seen and it made me so happy I knew right then and there that I had made a difference in his life and he did the same for me. He couldn't stop smiling and by the time I had to leave I was sad to go but we both got an experience that we would never forget.
