Augustine Onyema was among the recipients of the 2025 Rising Star Award in Computational and Data Sciences at the Oden Institute at The University of Texas at Austin. The meeting featured works from diverse fields of computational and data science, including the application of data science in Biology. Augustine, while speaking on the application of high-performance computing in Biology, showed how specific oncogenic mutations in the core of the nucleosome alter the stability of the nucleosome, hence affecting epigenetic processes, including DNA sliding and histone exchange.
Augustine Onyema presented his work to computational scientists at the 2025 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE25) in Fort Worth, Texas. This experience was made possible by the Building Engagement (BE) Program funded by the Sustainable Horizons Institute.
Augustine Onyema was present at the 69th annual meeting of the Biophysical Society in Los Angeles, California, in February 2025. Our work on time-related kinetic association (Conditional Activity) of residues in biological molecules was presented in the Molecular Dynamics I session. The activity of the lab made it into the April 2025 newsletter of the Biophysical Society. The lab represented by Augustine Onyema was also invited to present her work in the JUST-B seminar series during the Biophysical Society week in March 2025.
The lab represented by Augustine Onyema was present at the 5th Molecular Simulation Workshop held on September 13th, 2024, at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The occasion brought together graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculties to discuss numerous computational techniques to solve present-day problems. The quality of knowledge discussed was fascinating. Thanks to the organizers led by Professor Gennady Gor for planning such an event.
The Loverde's lab, represented by Augustine Onyema, was present at the Graduate Center in Manhattan, New York, to welcome new graduate students to the City University of New York (CUNY). The president of the GC, Joshua Brumberg, welcomed the students to CUNY, emphasizing that his office was always available to support students. There was a display of the amazing scientific research done in the CUNY system, with Augustine presenting our work on the structural effect of oncogenic mutation in the nucleosome.
Augustine won a travel grant to attend the 8th I-CoMSE workshop on July 22nd to 26th, 2024 at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN. Learning from Professor Michael Shirts (University of Colorado Boulder), Yamil Colon (University of Notre Dame), among others, we learn the basics of building a machine learning model and how these model could be implemented in biological sciences including drug discovery. The conditions to get a good predictive model was also discussed.
Augustine received a travel grant to attend the MDAnalysis/MolSSI software packaging workshop at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. The workshop drilled us in best practices in the development of Python Modules for Biological studies. The use of git in collaborative task, code testing with Pytest, and code packaging for the science community were discussed.
The Loverde's lab was fully represented at the 68th annual meeting of the Biophysical Society at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 10–14, 2024. Every member of the lab was busy discussing thier research with other scientist in the field. Augustine gave a platform talk in the Molecular Dynamics II session on the topic "Molecular Dynamics Simulations of The Structural Effects Of Oncogenic Mutations in the Nucleosome". This platform presentation was sponsored by the Amie James Science Travel Award. Thanks to the funding partners for their benevolence.
Augustine was among the invited speaker at the October 13th, 2023 New York City Integrative Structural Biology Symposium jointly organized by the New York Structural Biology Center (NYSBC) and the CUNY-Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) at the CUNY-ASRC Auditorium in New York.
The Loverde's lab was present at the Fall 2023 ACS meeting at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California from the 13th to 17th August 2024. With the theme of "Harnessing the Power of Data", the lab presented her works in the poster and platform sessions. The lab also to some time to enjoy the rich cultural heritage in San Francisco, California, USA. The Doctoral Student Research Grant (DSRG) was used to sponsor my trip for this presentation.
Promotion to Candidacy
Augustine presented his thesis proposal and preliminary results to his committee members and was promoted to candidacy in February 2023. Thanks to all members of his committee for their guidance.
Augustine was among the Poster presenters at the 50th Middle Atlantic Regional Meeting (MARM) of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Ewing, New Jersey, USA from June 1st - 4th, 2022.
Plenary Speaker at 3rd world Environment Day International Conference 2019, Imo State University (IMSU), Imo State, Nigeria. Preseneted on the "Influence of Pesticide Treatment on the Protein Content of Three Nigerian most Cultivated Vigna Species' seedlings."
