We would like to say a huge thank you to Marlhy for her time and awesome responses!
Enjoy!
What was it like being mentored by Rooney in photography and what did you learn from her?
"Rooney helped me learn so much about photography! I think one of the biggest things I learned from her is that the best pictures aren’t always posed, some of my favorite pictures of us are the ones we didn’t plan."
What has been your favorite part of being on the Attaway Appeal staff and how did you first get involved with the paper?
"I love being creative, and feel like I get along better with others who are creative too. Being on the Attaway Appeal really helped me to find a new group of creatives to be around, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t join to get closer with one girl in particular :)"
What drove you to apply to art school in Florence and how has your experience there impacted your art and yourself?
"Going to school in Europe has been a dream of mine since I was little, and finding an art school in Florence really felt like a dream come true for me. It’s definitely scary to leave home, but I had a lot of support from Rooney, so I knew it was the right choice to go. Art culture is different anywhere you go, and Florence has really opened my eyes to that. I’m getting to learn about so many different expressions of art and styles and it’s really helping me find my individual identity as an artist."
What would you say are the biggest similarities and differences between you and your character Stephanie?
"Stephanie and I are both creative minds for sure. We gravitate towards work in the arts, and are open to trying different styles to become more educated in those arts. We are both really loyal, Stephanie looks out for her friends and protects those she cares about, I do the same and I’m always called “the mom” of my friend group. Overall we’re really similar people, which makes being Stephanie not only easier, but has opened my eyes to a lot of connections from the character to my own personal life, and helped me to grow."
What do you hope the viewers take away from Stephanie and Rooney’s relationship and from the show in general?
"I hope that the story of Stooney really helps others to feel comfortable and confident in who they are. We all go through different phases, styles, friend groups etc throughout our life and its really scary thinking you’re different from everyone else. My goal as Stephanie is to bring a confidence and unapologetic attitude to the idea of being different and loving that about yourself. Stephanie and Rooney were figuring themselves out and definitely had tough moments, but you see them truly the happiest when they’re open and honest about their feelings."
How do you think your character has developed throughout the course of the show?
"I’ve been lucky enough to really grow with Stephanie over the last few years, and I’m so proud of where she’s at now. With Stephanie’s storyline growing over 4 shows now, she’s become stronger, more open minded to trying new things but always staying true to herself. She’s a loyal friend, unapologetic nerd, and is really comfortable with herself. It can be really tough to be individual and unique especially in high school, and although Stephanie’s been through different phases and hobbies, she never worried about fitting in or being like anyone else. Portraying her has been really inspiring and is very much how I approach my life as Marlhy."
