This event is a production of Atlanta 500 Women Scientists & the Atlanta Science Tavern.
The event is open to the public. We will be collecting donations for Ciencia PR, a nonprofit transforming science education in Puerto Rico.
Seating is on a first-come basis.
Ticket purchases/RSVPs are not required to attend nor do they reserve seats.
***Doors will open at 6:00 pm so that you can place your drink and dinner orders and socialize before the program gets underway at 7:00***

Throughout history, salons have acted as gathering places for conversation “either to please or to educate (Latin: aut delectare aut prodesse). From the salons of the Enlightenment to the 1940s salons of Gertrude Stein, women have played a central role in guiding and driving the discussion.

The Atlanta pod of 500 Women Scientists is thrilled to partner with the Atlanta Science Tavern and Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR) to bring discussions about science to the communities we serve. Please join us for an evening of science and conversation at the iconic Manuel’s Tavern. You'll hear short, idea-centered talks from local experts in the sciences. After the talk, we’ll have a lively discussion that brings science into context for everyday life.

The event is part of 500 Women Scientists' Science Salons for Puerto Rico Campaign. All donations benefit CienciaPR, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving public understanding of science, transforming K-12 science education, and supporting the career development of young scientists in Puerto Rico. Ciencia PR is a global community of scientists, students, educators and allies who believe that science can empower individuals with the knowledge, capacity, and agency to improve their lives and society.

Dr. Eri Saikawa

Air Pollution, Climate Change and Sustainable Development

Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences & Department of Environmental Health

Emory University

Bio: Eri Saikawa is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Environmental Sciences at Emory University. She received a Bachelor of Engineering in chemistry and biotechnology at the University of Tokyo, Master of Public Affairs with a concentration in environmental policy and natural resource management at Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Ph.D. from the Science, Technology and Environmental Policy program at Princeton University. Her research is focused on analyzing sources and magnitude of emissions linked to air pollution, ozone depletion, and climate change, as well as the impacts of these emissions on humans and society.

Dr. Nastassia V. Patin

How Bacteria are Like Animals and Why We Should Care

Postdoctoral Fellow, School of Biological Sciences

Georgia Institute of Technology

Bio: I graduated from Stanford University in 2008 with a degree in Biological Sciences. After a year in Central America working as a research field assistant and SCUBA Divemaster, I worked at a small biotechnology company in San Francisco for two years. I went on to get my Ph.D. at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, where I finished in 2016. My Ph.D. work focused on microbial chemical ecology, or how bacteria use small molecules to interact in nature. My postdoctoral work at Georgia Tech focuses on gene content and expression of entire microbial communities in marine environments.

Dr. Misty C. Bentz

Black Holes in Active Galaxies

Associate Professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy

Georgia State University

Bio: I grew up in Spokane, WA and attended University of Washington where I earned a double degree in 2002: BS in physics and BS in astronomy. I then moved to Columbus, OH and earned a PhD in astronomy from The Ohio State University in 2007. I spent two years working as a postdoctoral scholar and a third year as NASA Hubble Fellow at University of California, Irvine, before starting a faculty position in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Georgia State University in 2010. I am a NSF CAREER awardee, and in 2016 I became the first woman to ever earn tenure in my department. I am a frequent user of the Hubble Space Telescope, and I am also the PI for one of the first 13 science programs approved on the James Webb Space Telescope.
