Assignment Description:
This assignment requires you to provide a service to your fieldwork site. Collaborate with your fieldwork educator and determine if the facility or a particular client may need adaptive equipment you can fabricate, a handout or home treatment program, or lead a group of clients.
OTA 1170 Physical Dysfunction Fieldwork I is a one hour/week lecture and thirty hour clinical site experience. Lecture prepares for the off-site experience and future fieldwork II's by requiring academic and competency-based assignments. The externship will be arranged and take place at clinical facility sites within the community under the direction of an academic fieldwork coordinator. Emphasis is to expose students to a variety of diagnoses and develop professional behaviors and clinical observation skills. This is a designated service-learning course.
Recognize and abide by facility and federally mandated requirements for patient confidentiality and patient rights.
Observe and participate in the OT process as it relates to adult rehabilitation services and evidence-based practice.
Complete a service-learning project for facility/client use.
In this class, I had the opportunity to complete thirty hours of fieldwork experience at a skilled nursing facility. This was an incredible experience both for me personally, and academically. During my thirty hours, I was able to witness treatments for roughly forty patients. I was able to see a variety of diagnoses (most of which were orthopedic conditions), and a variety of intervention types (preparatory, purposeful, and occupation-based). I also had the opportunity to give back to this facility in any way I saw fit. After much deliberation, I decided that the most useful thing that I can do for them is make a packet for the patients on how to use adaptive equipment. Given that I saw mostly orthopedic conditions at this facility, I thought it would be best to include adaptive equipment that are needed after an orthopedic surgery. I spent about ten hours researching, designing, and printing out this packet to give to my fieldwork educator. In the end, I believe that this will be very useful for many of their patients.
