JAITA

Project JAITA: Daastaan Performance | Documentary Film | Web-Series

Iftikhar Khan, governor of Kashmir (1671-75) was making forcible conversions to Islam. Kashmiri Brahmins led by Pandit Kripa Ram sought the guidance of Guru Tegh Bahadur at Chakk Nananki (Anandpur Sahib). Guru made a promise, “Go tell Aurangzeb that if they can convert your Guru then you will all embrace Islam”.

It was November 11, 1675, when after brutally martyring Bhai Sati Das, Bhai Mati Das & Bhai Dyal Das, Guru Tegh Bahadur was beheaded. Fatal it was for the Sikhs & deadliest for the Mughal nizaam. While this act left everyone berserk & petrified, Bhai Jaita had the courage to challenge the mighty Mughals by taking the sees of Guru Tegh Bahadur from Chandni Chowk, Dilli to Chakk Nanaki (now, Anandpur Sahib) in 1675, covering 320 kms on horse with his three comrades keeping a vigil; receiving courage from Gurbaani, only to hand it over to Guru’s 9 year old son, Gobind Rai.

In the due course of time, Gobind Rai becomes Guru Gobind Singh. It took him 24 years to envisage what we know as the "Khalsa" order, March, 1699.

Imagine the history of South Asia without Bhai Jaita??

The creation of the "Khalsa" wouldn't have been envisaged without the possibility of the Bhai Jaita's movement from Dilli to Anandpur Sahib beholding Guru's "sheesh". It wasn't just a corporeal sees; it was a commitment; it was the legacy; that sheesh was the value system; that sheesh became the meaning of the Sikh.
