Bustling Markets

Morning has arrived! You were so exhausted last night that you don't quite remember what all the bustle was about as you entered the monumental entrance to the caravanserai. You go check on Ulugh Beg, but he is not in his quarters. Let's go find him.

As you step out of your quarters on the second floor, your first glance is of the enormous open courtyard with a fountain in the center. There must be between 300-400 crouching camels and tethered mules. Close your eyes. Listen to the flurry of sounds. So many languages and noisy animals! Feel the wind on your face. Take in the deluge of aromas. As you contemplate this panoramic view, you spot Ulugh Beg in the corner of the quad where meals are being prepared. You hurry to greet him.

Ulugh Beg greets you warmly. He offers a huge dish of plov and some tea. Before continuing on the journey, however, Ulugh Beg suggests that you go to the market to sell and trade some of your goods. This is a good place to do that.

Take a look at your inventory sheet ( document below). Decide what merchandise you want to sell and/or trade. You could also teach some of the other merchants how to make some of your wares. Let's get started.

As you get ready for your time at the market, remember to keep these questions in mind:

  1. How do the artifacts of a culture influence and contribute to it?

  2. How does food reflect culture?

  3. How can food help us build understanding of other cultures?

  4. How does our culture influence the way we view the world?
